Along the way, snoring itself has been linked to more than sleepless partners: several studies connect chronic snoring with a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. 


This article looks at what the gathered research actually shows about those health risks, how different anti-snoring gadgets stack up, and the important difference between simple snoring and a more serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea - because a product that helps one may do nothing for the other.

A large meta-analysis found that people who snore habitually have about a 26% higher risk of stroke than people who don't - and the risk was even higher specifically in men, at 54%. Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are related but different things. Anti-snoring gadgets work through different mechanisms: nasal strips and dilators widen the nostrils to reduce airflow resistance; mandibular advancement devices, worn like a mouthguard, gently push the lower jaw forward to open the airway; and CPAP machines, the standard medical treatment for diagnosed OSA, deliver continuous pressurized air to keep the airway open all night.

The health-risk side of snoring is genuinely established, if modest: a large meta-analysis pooling over 65,000 people found habitual snoring was linked to a 15% higher risk of coronary heart disease and a 26% higher risk of stroke, with the stroke risk climbing higher in men specifically. A separate meta-analysis focused on cardiovascular outcomes found snorers had a 28% higher risk of developing coronary artery disease. Neither study found a significant link to overall cardiovascular disease or all-cause mortality, and both note the risk may partly reflect undiagnosed sleep apnea rather than snoring alone. 


On the gadget side, the evidence is mixed and, in one case, surprising: a small early trial found nasal strips reduced snoring intensity in mild snorers, but a much larger 2024 meta-analysis of 17 studies found nasal dilators produced no significant improvement in breathing interruptions, snoring frequency, or oxygen levels. Mandibular advancement devices fared better on objective breathing measures, meaningfully reducing the AHI in a randomized trial, though the same trial found no significant reduction in objectively measured snoring itself, despite bed partners reporting real improvement.

In a randomized trial of mandibular advancement devices for sleep apnea, roughly 86% of users reported side effects like jaw pain, excess saliva, or dry mouth - almost identical to the 87% reported by people using a fake placebo device. But five patients developed a permanent change to their bite from using the real device, a risk the placebo group didn't share. It's a reminder that even evidence-backed anti-snoring devices carry real trade-offs.

For someone weighing an anti-snoring gadget, the research suggests matching the product to the actual problem matters. Nasal strips and dilators are cheap and low-risk, but the strongest available evidence - a meta-analysis, not a single small trial - found no measurable effect on sleep apnea severity; any benefit for plain snorers without apnea remains uncertain and based on older, smaller research. Mandibular advancement devices have real evidence behind them for reducing breathing interruptions in mild-to-moderate OSA, making them a reasonable option for diagnosed cases, though side effects like jaw or gum discomfort are common and occasionally permanent.

Taken together, the research supports treating snoring as worth paying attention to, without treating every anti-snoring gadget as equally supported. The clearest finding is that snoring, especially chronic and loud snoring, deserves a conversation with a doctor rather than an automatic trip to the gadget aisle.


For anyone shopping in this category, a few checks help. For nasal strips or dilators, treat them as a low-cost trial for mild, occasional snoring rather than a guaranteed fix - the strongest research available doesn't support them as a meaningful treatment for sleep apnea, so packaging that implies they treat apnea is a red flag worth questioning. For mandibular advancement devices, look for one that's adjustable and, ideally, fitted or recommended by a dentist or sleep specialist, since custom or professionally guided devices in the research performed more predictably than one-size-fits-all versions, and ill-fitting devices carry a higher chance of jaw and bite problems. 


Be skeptical of any product, chin strap or otherwise, that claims to reduce sleep apnea risk or cardiovascular risk without citing a specific clinical measurement like the AHI, since that's a testable claim the strongest products should be able to point to. Most importantly: loud, frequent snoring accompanied by gasping, choking, or daytime exhaustion is a sign to see a doctor for a possible OSA diagnosis before buying anything, since an accurate diagnosis - not a gadget - determines which treatment actually fits the problem.
