These pin devices, usually called microneedling rollers or derma rollers, are covered in dozens of tiny needles, typically 0.25 to 1.5 millimeters long. Rolling one across the skin creates a grid of shallow, controlled micro-injuries, a concept borrowed from "collagen induction therapy" originally developed for scars and skin texture.


The theory for hair is straightforward: those tiny injuries trigger the skin's wound-healing response, releasing growth factors that can reach hair follicles sitting just below the surface. In theory, this could nudge sluggish or shrinking follicles back toward active growth, and may also help any topical treatment applied afterward absorb more effectively.

That theory checks out at a cellular level. A mouse study found that repeated microneedling alone switched on several genes tied to hair growth, including ones in the same signaling pathway minoxidil is thought to use, confirming the mechanism is real, not just marketing language.


In humans, the picture strengthens further, but with a major caveat. Multiple randomized trials and meta-analyses, together covering well over 600 scalp hair loss patients, found that microneedling reliably boosted hair count and thickness beyond what minoxidil achieved alone, with mild, manageable side effects. This is a genuinely solid, replicated finding, not a one-off.


The caveat: virtually every one of these studies tested microneedling combined with minoxidil, never the pin device used entirely on its own. And none of them looked at beards specifically; all of the human evidence comes from scalp hair loss research. The biology of facial follicles is broadly similar, but that similarity has not actually been tested.
