Unwanted sound follows people everywhere, a snoring partner, a noisy office, a loud commute, a factory floor, and it’s no surprise that products now promise to shut it out. Earplugs and noise-blocking earbuds get reached for constantly, whether the goal is falling asleep, protecting hearing on the job, focusing at work, or surviving a long flight.


Not all of these products work the same way, though. Some physically plug the ear canal, while others electronically generate sound waves designed to cancel noise before it reaches your eardrum, and those two approaches don’t perform equally well in every situation.
